Phoenix Fellowship

The Phoenix Fellowship Church

The Phoenix Fellowship Church is located four miles north of the city of Durban in what was historically the heart of the sugar cane fields of South Africa. Phoenix Township was established as an apartheid era township for Indian people (people from the country of India). It took its name from the nearby Phoenix Settlement (now Bambayi) established in 1904 by Mahatma Gandhi. Indian people were voluntarily and forcibly moved to the township from the other overcrowded Indian townships like Chatworth and from areas demarcated for habitation by White South Africans. Today, in post-apartheid South Africa the Township is a vibrant manifestation of Indian South African culture with a growing Zulu community.

The Phoenix Fellowship has a vision to reach out to this community for the glory of God! The church’s desire is to reach out in Christ’s love and grow disciples of Jesus Christ. The church currently meets at a school (Phoenix Tech). They are in the process of erecting a church building that will not only be used as a place of worship but also provide a facility that can be used to help the community in practical ways.

In the next few years the goal is to set up a health care clinic within the church to aid the people of the area. Very few people in the community have medical aid and the hospitals draw peoplefrom all over, making them over populated, under-staffed and borderline deplorable. The church would like to start by providing food to the community. They will also provide family and addiction counseling and basic life skills training. Youth ministry will also be an important service to this community where gangs and drug dealing are rife. As the funding increases, they will start up a simple “one day a month” clinic staffed by doctors and nurses from the congregation at The Phoenix Fellowship. The staff would perform physical exams, check blood sugar/pressure, diagnosis health issues and provide referrals.

The Phoenix Fellowship church is a body of believers with a desire to show the love of Christ by meeting the needs of its community in a practical way. 1 John 3:18- Dear children let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
